I have always liked the traditional way of mowing grass. Besides being quiet and ecological, it creates a direct connection between the tool and the person using it.
After the original wooden snath from my grandfather became damaged, I started experimenting with modern lightweight materials and built several custom composite replacements using carbon fiber, titanium, aramid and bamboo. I wish my grandfather were alive to test it.
Experimental composite scythe snaths built using carbon fiber, titanium, aramid and bamboo.
Materials
- Carbon fiber
- Aramid (Kevlar)
- Titanium hardware
- Natural bamboo
Construction
The handles and structural components were hand-built using layered composite construction techniques with emphasis on low weight, stiffness and durability.
Blade Connection
Special attention was given to the blade mounting system, including custom composite and titanium clamp components designed specifically for traditional scythe blades.
