Rethymno II

The Venetian fortress of Fortezza was built in 1590 at the top of a small hill called "Paleokastro" to protect the city from pirate raids and the Turks. The artillery and gunpowder magazines, bastions, rector's and councillor's residences are still well-preserved. Besides, within the walls of Fortezza there are also churches of Agios Theodoros and Agia Ekaterini, the Ottoman Mosque of Sultan Ibrahim Han and Erofili theatre.
